Latimer Controls Wins $3.2M DOE Grant with NREL and Industry Partners for Solar Energy Grid Management Innovation

We are excited to announce that Latimer Controls, in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and a group of select industry partners, has been awarded a $3.2 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technologies Office OPTIMA funding program. This funding will support the development of an innovative integrated variability management solution named CORRECT (Coordinated Operation for Renewable Energy Dominant Transmission Grids). CORRECT aims to assess and manage the flexibility provided by high penetrations of of inverter-based resources and distributed energy resources on the bulk power system. CORRECT also aims to harmonize the interactions between resource-level and system-level variability management, as well as enhance the power system’s overall variability management.

Incorporating Latimer Controls advanced control architecture and potential high limit estimation techniques, this 3 year initiative aims to improve the predictability and flexibility of utility-scale and distributed solar energy, making it a more reliable and substantial part of our energy mix. This initiative not only aligns with Latimer Controls' mission to build the future of smart control systems but also propels us toward a more sustainable and renewable energy-dominated grid.

Working alongside NREL and our esteemed project partners, we are set to create a set of interconnected tools that will be essential for the renewable transition. These tools will facilitate better management and utilization of solar energy, thus ensuring that solar power can be integrated on the grid at high penetrations while maintaining reliability and economic value. As we move forward with this project, we remain committed to innovation and excellence in our efforts to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

For more details on the scope and impact of this project, you can view the official DOE press release here.

We thank the U.S. Department of Energy for recognizing and supporting our vision. This grant represents a significant milestone for Latimer Controls. We look forward to sharing updates as we progress in this project.
